A fake 1815 Chronograph copies the outside of an A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph. It does not copy the movement. The genuine watch is hand-wound, has a flyback function, and uses the in-house caliber L951.5. Replicas use a Seagull ST19, a Valjoux 7750, or a quartz module. Prices for fakes run from about $120 to $900. Genuine examples trade between about $40,000 and $70,000.
What the genuine 1815 Chronograph is
A. Lange & Söhne launched the 1815 Chronograph in 2004. Case diameter is 39.5 mm. Case height is about 11 mm. The dial carries two registers: small seconds at 8 o'clock and a 30-minute counter at 4 o'clock. The movement is the L951.5. It beats at 21,600 vph and runs about 60 hours on a full wind. The flyback lever lets the wearer reset and restart the chronograph with one push. The 1815 Chronograph has no date and no rotor.
Subdial layout is the first check
The 1815 Chronograph puts small seconds at 8 o'clock and the minute counter at 4 o'clock. The Seagull ST19 puts running seconds at 9 o'clock and its 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock. A replica built on an ST19 cannot place the registers at 8 and 4 without a new dial and a modified gear train. Most fakes sit close to 9 and 3. Some sellers photograph the watch at an angle to hide the gap.
Flyback test
The Venus 175 design that the ST19 copies has no flyback. A buyer can test this in the hand. Start the chronograph, let it run 10 seconds, then press the reset pusher while it runs. On a real 1815 Chronograph the hands snap to zero and start again. On an ST19 fake the pusher either does nothing or stops the movement. The 7750 has no flyback either.
Case and dial checks
- Case height. Genuine: about 11 mm. Fakes on a 7750 base: 13 mm to 15 mm.
- Date window. The 1815 Chronograph has none. A window at 3 or 4:30 is a mismatch.
- Logo. "A. Lange & Söhne" sits under 12 o'clock, with "Made in Germany" below it. Replicas print the second line at the wrong size or in the wrong place.
- Caseback. Genuine watches show the L951.5 with a hand-engraved balance cock. Replicas show a stock movement, a printed plate, or no engraving.
- Hands. Blued steel on genuine pieces, with heat-treated color. Painted blue on many fakes.
- Pushers. The genuine reset pusher has a short, firm travel.
Price bands for fakes
- $100 to $200. Quartz. Subdials are decorative on many of these and do not move.
- $250 to $450. Seagull ST19. Hand-wound. Subdials work but sit near 9 and 3.
- $500 to $900. Decorated ST19, sapphire crystal, better case finishing. Still no flyback.
Risks
Customs can seize replica watches at import. No Lange service center will touch a fake. A watchmaker who works on an ST19 can service it, but parts supply is thin. Resale value is low. The movement has no Lange stamp, no engraved cock, and no matching serial.
Short answer
If the subdials sit at 8 and 4, the case is 11 mm thick, and the reset pusher works while the chronograph runs, the watch matches the 1815 Chronograph layout. Most fakes fail at least one of those three checks. A genuine 1815 Chronograph costs more than 50 times the price of the best replica.
