Omega does not list a Speedmaster called "Apollo 8 35th Anniversary." I could not find a 2003 release with that name in Omega's catalog. Apollo 8 flew in December 1968, so a 35th anniversary falls in 2003. Buyers who search the phrase land on replicas of a different watch: the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8, released in 2018 for the 50th anniversary of the mission.
The watch behind the search term
Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8, reference 311.92.44.30.01.001, launched in 2018.
- Case: black ceramic, 44.25 mm.
- Dial: skeletonized, with a laser-textured surface built to look like the Moon.
- Movement: Calibre 1861, manual wind, chronograph.
- Caseback: sapphire window over a movement with blackened bridges and a crater texture.
- Strap: black.
Omega later added a version with the Calibre 3861. Check the reference number, not the nickname.
How replica sellers label it
Most listings mix three labels: "Apollo 8," "Dark Side of the Moon," and "35th anniversary edition." The third label has no basis in Omega's lineup. Treat it as marketing text.
Movements found inside these replicas:
- Seagull ST19 manual wind chronograph, sold as an "1861 clone."
- Quartz with a decorative chronograph hand.
- Three-hand automatic with a chronograph module bolted on.
Checks before you pay
- Weight. Ceramic is lighter than steel. A coated steel case weighs more than the genuine case.
- Pushers. The 1861 has a firm start, stop, and reset. ST19 pushers travel further and feel softer.
- Caseback. The 2018 Apollo 8 shows a decorated 1861. Replicas show a plain plate or an automatic rotor.
- Subdials. Positions at 3, 6, and 9 mean little on their own. Watch the hands run.
- Bezel. Ceramic resists scratches. Coated steel wears at the edges and around the crystal.
- Paperwork. Ref 311.92.44.30.01.001 should appear on the card and the caseback.
Price bands
- Under $100: quartz, mineral glass, plated case.
- $150 to $350: Seagull ST19, sapphire crystal on some models, PVD case.
- $400 to $800: super clone tier, closer dial and caseback detail, case still steel.
Parts a replica does not copy
Ceramic case hardness, crater texture depth on the movement bridges, the column wheel in the chronograph, and factory service. Parts for a replica come from sellers, not from Omega.
What stays unknown
No confirmed 2003 Apollo 8 35th anniversary release exists in Omega's records that I can verify. Ask the seller for the reference number and a photo of the caseback before paying.
