The 2018 Cartier Santos is the Santos de Cartier, relaunched at SIHH in January 2018. A fake of this model copies the square case and the Roman numeral dial. It parts company with the real watch at the bracelet, the movement, the crystal, and the caseback. The fastest check is the bracelet. Real watches use SmartLink, a system that lets the owner remove a link by hand, and QuickSwitch, a release at the lug that swaps the strap with no tool. Most fakes use a standard spring bar.

What Cartier changed in 2018

Cartier brought the Santos back in two sizes. The large case measures 39.8 mm across and 47.5 mm lug to lug, at 9.38 mm thick. The medium measures 35.1 mm. Both use a steel case, sapphire crystal, and a water resistance rating of 100 m. The date sits at 6 o'clock. The dial carries a secret signature: the word Cartier is drawn into the strokes of the numeral VII. Fakes print this mark in the wrong weight or leave it out.

The 1847 MC movement

The real watch runs caliber 1847 MC. It is automatic, beats at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), has 23 jewels, and holds about 42 hours of power reserve. A fake case holds a generic automatic or a quartz module. Ask for a photo of the rotor. A real 1847 MC carries Cartier engraving on the rotor and finished bridges. A fake shows a blank rotor, rough brushing, or a plastic spacer ring that holds a small movement in a large case.

Santos-Dumont is a different watch

Sellers mix the two names. The Santos-Dumont is a thin quartz watch with a leather strap and no date. The Santos de Cartier is the automatic steel watch with a bracelet. A listing that calls a quartz watch a 2018 Santos de Cartier is wrong about the model.

Serial numbers and papers

Cartier engraves a serial number on the caseback and prints the matching number on the warranty card and the sales invoice. Numbers on fakes repeat across batches. A seller who shows the same number on two watches holds a stock of copies. Cartier does not issue authentication letters. A service estimate from Cartier is the paper that carries weight in a resale.

Legal status in the US

US law treats these watches as counterfeit goods. 18 U.S.C. Section 2320 sets criminal penalties for trafficking in counterfeit goods. 19 U.S.C. Section 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy imported counterfeits, and CBP can assess a civil penalty tied to the value of the shipment. CBP rules bar import for resale. A single item in accompanied baggage can pass at the officer's discretion, and the goods stay subject to seizure.

Price gap

The steel Santos de Cartier large sells near $7,000 at US retail. Fakes sell for $100 to $500, and listings that claim 1:1 quality add $200 or more. No fake carries the 1847 MC. Price is the first filter: an offer far below resale value is a copy.

Checks in order

  1. Bracelet: look for the SmartLink release buttons and the QuickSwitch tab at the lug.
  2. Dial: find the word Cartier inside the numeral VII.
  3. Caseback: compare the serial to the card and look at engraving depth.
  4. Crystal: real sapphire has an anti-reflective coat. Fakes show a blue tint at an angle.
  5. Movement: request a photo of the rotor before any payment.
