A fake grand complication is a watch that copies the appearance of a high-complication timepiece, such as a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, or split-seconds chronograph, without carrying the mechanical engineering that defines one. The label covers everything from painted subdials that never move to open-worked movements with a genuinely functioning moon phase. The dividing line is function, not finish.

What counts as a grand complication?

In traditional watchmaking, a grand complication combines at least three complications inside one movement. The classic trio is a chronograph, a perpetual calendar, and a minute repeater, all driven by the same gear train.

That combination adds hundreds of parts and weeks of hand finishing, so genuine examples leave the workshop in tiny numbers. Auction prices for them routinely reach six and seven figures.

Why do fake grand complications exist at all?

A real grand complication is out of reach for nearly every collector, yet its dial layout is instantly recognizable. That gap creates demand for watches that deliver the silhouette of a Patek Philippe 6300 or a Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers without the price.

Most of these watches are built on ordinary automatic or quartz bases, then dressed with overlapping subdials, engraved rotors, and printed text. The dial reads as complicated; the movement is not.

Which complications on a fake actually work?

  • Date and day windows: usually real, since they run off the base movement's calendar works.
  • Moon phase: often real on mid-tier movements, printed and static on cheap ones.
  • Chronograph: real when the base is a chronograph caliber; on non-chronograph bases the pushers may spin freely and do nothing.
  • Perpetual calendar: almost never perpetual. Expect a simple or annual calendar hiding behind a busy dial, or a hand that only moves with the date.
  • Tourbillon: sometimes a genuinely rotating cage; frequently a fixed bridge or an open-heart cutout sold as a tourbillon.
  • Minute repeater: nearly always cosmetic. The gongs and hammers are decoration, and the slide does not wind a striking train.

How can you tell a decorative complication from a working one?

  1. Set the watch to a month with 30 days and wait past midnight. A true perpetual calendar jumps straight to the 1st; a simple calendar lands on the 31st.
  2. Run the chronograph for ten minutes, then reset it. A real chronograph snaps back to zero every time.
  3. Slide the repeater lever and listen. If the watch is silent, or if the subdial hands do not sweep and reset when you press the pushers, those features are cosmetic.

Counterfeit versus homage: does the distinction matter?

An homage borrows a complication layout on a watch with its own branding. A counterfeit stamps a protected brand name and logo onto the dial and case back, which is a different legal category entirely.

In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is prohibited under trademark law, and customs can seize shipments. Buying for personal use is generally not prosecuted, but reselling one as genuine is.

Does a fake grand complication keep time well?

Timekeeping usually depends on the base caliber, not the decorative layer on top. A decent Japanese or Swiss-based automatic can hold within a few seconds a day, while a cheap quartz fake may simply be accurate because it is quartz.

What rarely holds up is the complication module. Added calendar plates, layered dials, and extra hands create friction and alignment problems that appear within months.

What about servicing and repairs?

Independent watchmakers often decline replica work because parts are unavailable and tolerances are undocumented. When a decorative calendar wheel strips or a pusher snaps, replacement usually means sourcing a whole new movement rather than a single component.

Ask any seller directly which functions are operational before buying, and treat a vague answer as a no.
