The short answer

There is no A. Lange & Söhne model called the "Lange 2." If a listing uses that name next to ref. 258.026, the seller is inventing a model, and that alone tells you what you are looking at. Ref. 258.026 is a real A. Lange & Söhne reference number, and like most Lange references it has been copied. The replicas get the silhouette close. They do not get the movement close, and they never will.

Below is what I check first, in order, when a Lange shows up in photos and the price is wrong.

Why Lange is one of the hardest brands to replicate

Most fake watches start with a movement that already exists. A cloned ETA, a Seiko or a Chinese automatic gets dropped into a copied case, and the job is done. Lange does not work that way. The manufacture in Glashütte builds its own calibers in small numbers, and none of them exist outside the factory.

  • The outsized date on the Lange 1 family uses two separate discs that jump together at midnight. Copies use a single disc or a printed ring, and the date window sits off center.
  • Movements get a German silver three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, blued screws and a hand-engraved balance cock. Hand engraving has depth and tool marks. Laser engraving looks flat.
  • Finishing on surfaces nobody sees, Glashütte ribbing, perlage, black polish on steel parts, is a signature. No replica maker spends hours on parts hidden under a plate.

Movement tells to check first

Ask for a photo of the caseback before anything else. A sapphire back is the fastest way to end the conversation.

  • Real Lange: three-quarter plate, engraved balance cock, gold chatons held by screws, a hand-engraved signature.
  • Fake: a rotor with a generic shape, printed gold circles instead of real chatons, no engraving depth, and often a Miyota or Seagull base with a decorative plate screwed on top.
  • Quartz is an instant no. Lange has never made a quartz watch.

Winding feel matters too. A real Lange crown feels dense and geared. The clones feel light and gritty, and the crown often sits a fraction too high or too far out from the case.

Case, dial and hands

Lange builds cases in yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum. Steel is effectively absent from the catalog, so any ref. 258.026 listed in steel is wrong before you even look at the dial.

  • Printing: real Lange type is thin and crisp. Replicas show thick lettering, ink bleed and subdial rings that sit a hair off center.
  • Hands: look for clean bevels and no burrs where the hand meets the pinion. Blued hands should be a deep, even blue, not painted.
  • Case flanks: Lange polishes flat surfaces and cuts sharp bevels by hand. Copies round these edges off, and the lugs lose their crisp line.
  • Engravings on the back: reference, movement number and "Made in Germany" should be crisp and correctly spaced. Fakes are shallow and often repeat one serial across a whole batch.

Papers, serials and service history

A genuine Lange comes with a numbered certificate, and the numbers on the case, the movement and the paperwork match. Replicas do not bother. If a seller cannot show a consistent number set, stop there. A real Lange can also be verified and serviced through the manufacture, which is something no replica seller can offer.

Price reality

Precious-metal Langes trade in the five-figure range on the secondary market, and auction results back that up. A few hundred dollars does not buy a bargain Lange. It buys a fake, every time.

What a good replica can and cannot do

A top-tier replica can match the case shape, the dial layout, the crown position and even the weight if the maker uses a tungsten core. Photographed from two feet away, it reads as a Lange.

It cannot match the jumping outsized date, the hand engraving, the movement decoration under the sapphire back, or the ability to be serviced by Glashütte. Those are the four things you are actually paying for when you buy the real watch.

Quick checklist

  1. Model name: "Lange 2" does not exist.
  2. Material: steel is wrong, gold or platinum is right.
  3. Caseback: no hand-engraved balance cock, no Lange.
  4. Serial consistency: case, movement and certificate must agree.
  5. Price: if it is cheap, it is copied.

Bottom line

Ref. 258.026 is a real reference, and the "Lange 2" label attached to it in a listing is a fake seller's invention. Judge the watch on the caseback, the material and the paperwork, not on the front dial in a soft-lit photo.
