A. Lange & Söhne builds the outsize date from two separate number discs. The tens disc and the units disc sit in one plane, at one depth, behind one aperture. Most fake Lange big date watches use a single printed disc or two discs stacked on two levels. The digits sit at different heights and the gap between them is uneven. What the outsize date does
Lange relaunched in 1994. The Lange 1 carried the outsize date. The window is wider than a standard date window because each digit has its own disc. The units disc turns once a day. The tens disc carries digits 0 through 3 and moves on days 10, 20 and 30. A jumper spring holds each disc on center and the date advances in one step at midnight.
Dial side checks
- Depth. Both digits sit on one plane. A fake shows one digit sunken and the other near the crystal.
- Typeface. Stroke width matches between the tens disc and the units disc. Fakes mix two fonts in one window.
- Frame. The aperture edge is cut and beveled. Fake windows show a stamped edge with a burr.
- Spacing. The seam between the two digits is thin and even. Fakes show a wide gap or an overlap.
- Jump. The date changes at midnight in one motion. A slow crawl or a digit stuck halfway points to a fake or a damaged watch.
Movement checks
The Lange 1 runs the in-house calibre L901.0 with 365 parts, twin mainspring barrels, a 72-hour power reserve and 21,600 vph. The plate is untreated German silver. The balance cock is hand engraved, so the pattern belongs to that one watch. Gold chatons are screwed down and the screws are blued steel. Fakes use brass plates with rhodium plating and a stock third-party movement or a quartz module. Lange has never made a quartz watch.

Case back and metal
- The Lange 1 case measures 38.5 mm and carries a sapphire case back.
- The serial number is stamped on the movement and the case. Lange keeps records from 1994.
- Platinum cases carry a Pt950 hallmark. Gold cases carry a fineness mark.
How to verify
- Photograph the dial with the date set to 08, 18 and 28. Check digit depth and spacing at all three.
- Ask for a case back photo with the balance cock in focus.
- Send the serial number to A. Lange & Söhne service. The brand confirms the reference and the original case metal.
- Compare the watch to a listed reference. The big date appears on the Lange 1, Grand Lange 1, Little Lange 1, Lange 1 Moon Phase, Saxonia Outsize Date and Datograph. A big date Lange that matches none of these references is not a Lange.
What photos cannot show
Depth is hard to judge in photos. Good lighting hides a stacked disc. A hands-on check, or a service estimate from the brand, settles the question. Price points the same direction. Genuine Lange 1 watches trade in the tens of thousands of USD on the secondary market. A price in the hundreds does not match a Lange.
