Short answer

No replica of the Patek Philippe 5231 World Time uses a cloisonné enamel dial. The genuine dial is built from gold wire and fired enamel, a process no replica factory runs. Fake 5231 models copy the case shape, the 38.5 mm size, the city disc layout and the 24-hour ring. They use printed dials, steel cases with gold plating, and a different movement. Prices for these replicas run about $150 to $1,000.

What the genuine 5231 is

The 5231 replaced the 5131 in Patek Philippe's World Time line. It comes in yellow gold (5231J), rose gold (5231R) and white gold (5231G), each with a different map on the dial. The case measures 38.5 mm across and about 10.2 mm thick. The movement is caliber 240 HU, a self-winding micro-rotor design with 24 time zones. A pusher at 10 o'clock moves the city disc in one-hour steps.

What the fakes copy

Case dimensions, lug shape, crown position, the pusher at 10 o'clock, sapphire crystal and a display back. Most replica 5231 models show a 24-city disc that turns with the hour hand. Some versions let the pusher jump the disc. Others use a fixed disc and a decorative pusher.

Where fakes fail

  • Dial: printed lines and an enamel-look coating. Genuine dials have gold wire walls and a glassy surface from repeated kiln firings at about 800 C.
  • Movement: replicas use a Miyota 9015 base, a Seagull ST movement or a low-grade automatic. None has a micro-rotor at 12 o'clock or Patek finishing.
  • Weight: a gold 5231 weighs far more than a steel replica. A plated case gives a different feel and a different sound when tapped.
  • City disc: lettering on fake discs is flat and a bit wide. Genuine printing is fine and sharp. City order and daylight-saving markers can sit off by one position.
  • Caseback: replica engraving is shallow. Reference numbers, hallmarks and movement numbers do not match Patek records.

Price range

Entry fakes sell for $150 to $300. Mid-range copies run $300 to $600 and add a better case finish and a working city disc. The top replica tier reaches $700 to $1,000. Genuine 5231 watches trade on the secondary market for far more than their original retail price, and figures change with each auction.

Before you buy

  1. Ask for photos of the dial in raking light. Printed patterns show dots and flat color. Enamel shows depth and reflections.
  2. Ask for a movement photo. A micro-rotor with the 240 HU layout looks different from a full rotor.
  3. Weigh the watch. Steel replicas land near 70 g to 90 g. Gold cases sit higher.
  4. Check the pusher. It should move the city disc by one hour per press.

Legal note

A counterfeit watch that carries the Patek Philippe name is an infringing item in the United States. Import, sale and shipping of these watches can lead to seizure and civil claims. A seller who describes a fake as genuine commits fraud.
