Fake Top Gun Miramar pilots are replica copies of IWC's Pilot's Watch Top Gun Miramar, a line released in 2012 with a matte ceramic case and khaki numerals. Replica copies sell from about $80 to $800. None carry an IWC movement.

The original reference

IWC showed the Top Gun Miramar in 2012 in two main models: the Big Pilot's Watch Top Gun Miramar ref. IW501902 at 48 mm, and the Pilot's Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar ref. IW388002 at 46 mm.

Case: zirconium oxide ceramic, dark grey. Case back: titanium. Dial: black with beige numerals, hands and minute track. Strap: green textile. Retail on the Big Pilot was about $16,500.

The name comes from the US Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun. The school sat at NAS Miramar until 1996, then moved to NAS Fallon in Nevada. The watch is a civilian product. It has no military issue history.

What replicas copy and what they get wrong

  • Case shell: most sub-$300 copies use PVD-coated steel, not ceramic. Ceramic is lighter than steel at the same size and feels colder at first touch.
  • Dial print: beige numerals lose edge sharpness at 6 and 12. Genuine print holds a crisp outline under a loupe.
  • Date window: position, frame shape and font weight vary between batches.
  • Case back: engraving depth on the titanium plate is shallow on low tiers.
  • Strap: textile weave is looser, and buckle stamping sits off center.

Price tiers

  1. $80 to $150. Alloy case, quartz movement, printed dial. Silkscreen numerals. Not close to the original.
  2. $200 to $350. Steel case with PVD, automatic movement (Seiko NH35 or a Chinese clone), sapphire crystal, decent dial print.
  3. $400 to $800. Ceramic or ceramic-coated case, clone movement with a 46 to 48 hour power reserve, applied numerals, anti-reflective coating on both crystal faces.

Checks before you buy

  • Get the case material in writing. "Ceramic look" means coated steel.
  • Ask for a scale photo. A 48 mm ceramic case weighs less than a steel case of the same size.
  • Request a macro shot of the dial at 12 and 6. Check numeral edges and the triangle marker.
  • Ask which movement sits inside, and whether the seller stocks spares.
  • Water resistance claims above 60 m on a replica are untested. Keep the watch dry unless a watchmaker pressure-tests it.
  • Confirm a return window in writing before payment.

Limits

Replica dials, movements and case back stamps differ from the original. Resale value is near zero. Service parts for clone movements come from the replica supply chain, not from IWC. A replica is a look-alike, not a substitute for the reference.
