"Fake pilots Top Gun mission" is search slang for replica pilot watches built to look like IWC's Pilot's Watch Top Gun line. How replica versions are built
- Case: ceramic-coated steel on most copies, solid zirconium oxide ceramic on the top tier. A coated case shows grey steel under a scratch. Ceramic does not.

- Movement: an Asian 7750 clone or a decorated automatic. Neither matches the 69380 architecture.
- Caseback: engraved steel with a titanium look. Genuine uses titanium.

- Measure the case. 44.5 mm is the genuine figure. Copies run 43 to 46 mm.
- Weigh the watch. Titanium and ceramic change the number.
- Look at subdial spacing. The 7750 layout sits closer to center than the 69380 layout.
- Check the date font and the angle of the bezel numerals.
- Ask if the crown screws down and if the chrono resets to zero.
- Confirm the crystal material in writing.
