What “fake Portugieser Automatic 31” means

“Portugieser Automatic 31” is not an IWC model name. IWC lists the Portugieser Automatic 40 and the Portugieser Automatic 42. The number 31 matches the jewel count of caliber 52010. That caliber powers the Portugieser Automatic 42, also called the seven-day model. A fake with this label copies that watch. It is not made by IWC.

Which IWC model the listing points to

Ask for the case diameter and movement name. The Portugieser Automatic 42 has a 42.3 mm case, caliber 52010, and a 168-hour power reserve. The Portugieser Automatic 40 has a 40.4 mm case, caliber 82200, and a 60-hour power reserve. A listing that says “31” and gives no diameter or caliber is vague. Match the photos to the IWC catalog before you judge replica quality.

What the 31 does not tell you

Jewels are bearings in a movement. The count is one spec. It does not prove a replica uses the same movement layout. Many fakes use a generic automatic movement with a decorated rotor and a false bridge shape. Check the sub-dial positions, the date window, and the power reserve indicator against the IWC model. The 42 mm model has small seconds at 9 o’clock, a power reserve display at 3 o’clock, and a date window at 6 o’clock.

Checks for a close replica

  • Case: measure diameter. The 42 mm model is 42.3 mm. A case that measures 40 mm is a different model.
  • Dial: inspect macro photos. Look at applied numerals, printing, and sub-dial spacing.
  • Movement: ask for a video with the watch running. Watch the power reserve hand move. A printed plate with no moving reserve hand is a sign of a lower grade fake.
  • Material: stainless steel has more heft than plated alloy. Plating can wear at the lugs and crown.
  • Water resistance: treat seller claims as unverified. A fake has no IWC pressure test.

Price and risk

Replica prices track movement type and finish. A fake with a decorated generic movement costs less than one with a cloned layout. No replica is an IWC. Resale is near zero. Service support is scarce. U.S. Customs can seize counterfeit goods. Buy if you accept those limits.
