Quick answer
The Rolex Datejust 16200 is a 36 mm stainless steel watch with a smooth bezel and a sapphire crystal. Rolex built it from 1988 to about 2001. Inside is the caliber 3135, an automatic movement with a quickset date. A fake 16200 copies the case, dial, and bracelet of that watch. Almost all fakes of this reference run a movement Rolex did not make, so the movement, the case thickness, and the date font differ from the original.
Reference 16200 facts
- Case: 36 mm stainless steel Oyster case, screw-down crown, 100 m water resistance.
- Bezel: smooth, polished steel. A fluted bezel is reference 16234, not 16200.
- Crystal: sapphire with a 2.5x cyclops lens over the date at 3 o'clock.
- Movement: caliber 3135, 31 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 48 hours of power reserve.
- Bracelet: Oyster 78360 or Jubilee 62510H, 20 mm lugs.
- Dial: many variants. Tritium lume until about 1998, then Super-LumiNova.
- Weight: about 120 g to 130 g on a steel Oyster bracelet.
What replica 16200s get wrong
Replica listings for the 16200 name movements such as the A2836, the ETA 2824 clone, and the SH3135. The first two are thicker than the 3135 and need a case deeper than the genuine profile of about 12 mm. A copy that measures 13 mm or more shows next to a real watch.
Date and cyclops: Rolex uses a 2.5x lens. Many copies use a 1.5x or 2x lens and a date font that is too wide. On some builds the date sits off center under the lens.
Bezel and metal: the 16200 came in steel with a smooth bezel. A seller who shows a fluted bezel or a two-tone case on a 16200 is mixing references. Gold and two-tone copies copy the 16233 or 16234.
Bracelet: 20 mm lugs. End link gaps, a soft clasp, and a coronet stamp with the wrong shape are the usual faults on lower tiers.
Dial: tritium plots turn cream or brown with age. Copies use painted lume that does not age. Compare the index shape, the coronet, and the dial signature at 6 o'clock.
Caseback: the 16200 caseback is plain steel. The reference and the serial sit between the lugs. Copy stamps do not match Rolex lettering.
Checks before you buy a replica
- Measure the case. Near 36 mm wide, near 12 mm thick, 20 mm lugs.
- Look at the date through the cyclops. The lens should magnify 2.5x.
- Move the crown through all positions. Quickset date is a separate position on the 3135.
- Weigh the watch. A light case points to plated brass or a thin steel case.
- Ask which movement is inside and who made it. A seller who cannot answer is a seller to skip.
Limits of any replica
No copy uses a Rolex movement. Some builds drop in a used 3135 bought second hand and call the result a franken watch. That path costs close to the price of a used genuine 16200.
Rolex does not service or authenticate counterfeit watches. A copy has no resale path through a dealer, and copy serial numbers do not appear in Rolex records. Water resistance on a copy is not tested to the 100 m rating of the original. Used steel 16200 prices change with dial type, bracelet, and box and papers, so ask a dealer for a current number.
