Short answer
A fake Speedmaster 3861 gives itself away in one of four ways: a visible automatic rotor behind a clear caseback, a date window, a balance that ticks at 28,800 or 21,600 vibrations per hour instead of 25,200, or no METAS Master Chronometer card. Any one of these points to a counterfeit or a watch built from mixed parts.
What the real Calibre 3861 does
- Hand winding. No rotor.
- 26 jewels. 50 hour power reserve.
- Rate: 25,200 vph, 3.5 Hz.
- Co-axial escapement with a silicon balance spring.
- METAS Master Chronometer certification on the finished watch, tested to 15,000 gauss.
Omega replaced the Calibre 1861 with the 3861 in 2021. The old 1861 ran at 21,600 vph. The 3861 runs faster, at 25,200 vph. The Moonwatch kept its layout: 42 mm case, 20 mm lug width, subdials at 3, 6 and 9, pushers at 2 and 4, no date.
Checks you can run at a table
- Look at the dial. No 3861 Moonwatch has a date. A window at 3 or 4:30 means the watch carries a 7750-type automatic chronograph inside.
- Check subdial positions. The 30 minute counter sits at 3, the 12 hour counter at 6, the running seconds at 9. Copies built on a 7750 base add a date and shift the counters.
- Read the bezel. The 2021 insert is aluminum with a printed tachymeter scale and a dot over 90. Blurred print and a dot beside 90 show up on low grade copies.
- Wind it. The crown turns with light resistance on a hand-wound 3861. A rotor spins inside an automatic copy, and you feel it through the case.
- Press the pushers. Start, stop and reset snap on the real watch. Mushy pushers with long travel are common on replicas.
- Check the bracelet taper. The 3861 bracelet runs 20 mm at the lugs and tapers to 15 mm at the clasp.
Checks that need a watchmaker or a clear caseback
The sapphire version has a clear caseback. The hesalite version has a solid steel back with the Seahorse medallion and the NASA flight qualification text. A solid back hides the movement, so a watchmaker has to open the case.
- Beat rate. A timegrapher reads 25,200 vph on a 3861. ST19 based copies read 21,600 vph. 7750 copies read 28,800 vph.
- Escapement. The co-axial wheel and the silicon balance spring are visible under a loupe on the real calibre.
- Engraving. Movement bridges carry deep, filled engraving. Copies carry shallow laser marks.
- Finish. Geneva stripes on the bridges and polished screw heads appear on the real movement.
Papers, price and serials
Every Master Chronometer ships with a METAS certification card that matches the movement number. An Omega service center can open the case and confirm the calibre. Replicas sell from about $50 for quartz versions to $800 for decorated copies. A steel 3861 Moonwatch lists above $7,000 from Omega, and recent second-hand prices sit near list.
What these checks do not prove
Case, dial, hands and bracelet can come from different watches. A real 3861 movement inside a copy case still makes a mixed watch. Ask for the original invoice, the METAS card and a service history, then have the watch inspected before money changes hands.
