A fake Vacheron Constantin Patrimony copies the case shape and dial of the real watch. Inside, it uses a third-party movement and base metal. The strongest single check: Vacheron Constantin makes the Patrimony in 18k gold and platinum. A steel Patrimony does not exist. Any steel example is a replica.
What the Patrimony Is
Vacheron Constantin launched the Patrimony in 2004. The design comes from a 1957 ultra-thin dress watch. Case sizes run 40 mm and 42 mm. The bezel is thin and round. Markers are applied batons. Hands are baton shaped. Calibres used include the 1400 (manual wind) and the 2450 (automatic). Movements carry the Hallmark of Geneva.
Case and Metal
Genuine cases are 18k rose, white, or yellow gold, or platinum. Gold cases carry a 750 stamp. Platinum cases carry a 950 stamp. A Swiss assay mark sits next to the stamp.
Thickness gives fakes away. Calibre 1400 measures 2.6 mm thick. A Miyota 9015 measures 3.9 mm. An ETA 2824 measures 4.6 mm. Fakes that use those movements need a taller case. A three-hand Patrimony with date sits near 8.5 mm. Many replicas run past 10 mm.
Dial and Hands
- Applied Maltese cross at 12 o'clock. The real one is solid gold with polished edges. Fake versions are plated brass or foil.
- Printing is sharp under 10x magnification. Fake printing shows ragged edges and uneven ink.
- Baton hands reach the minute track. Fake hands are short or thick.
- Sub-seconds on some references sits at 6 o'clock.
Movement and Caseback
Real finishing: Cotes de Geneve on bridges, circular graining on the mainplate, black polished screw heads, beveled edges. Fake movements show plain machined surfaces. The Hallmark of Geneva applies to the movement. A caseback stamp alone does not prove anything.
Serial and reference numbers are engraved into the metal. The reference format looks like 81180/000R-9159. The letter marks the metal: R for rose gold, G for white gold, J for yellow gold, P for platinum. Laser dots and shallow etching point to a replica.
Price and Paperwork
New Patrimony models list between about $25,000 and $40,000. Gold scrap value on a 40 mm case runs into the thousands. Offers between $300 and $2,000 point to a replica, not a bargain. Genuine sets include a box, certificate, and service booklet. The certificate lists the reference, serial number, and sale date.
Limits of Any Check
Photos cannot confirm a watch. A watchmaker with the movement in hand can time the rate, check the beat, and inspect the finish. Ask for movement photos before money changes hands.
