Short answer
A. Lange & Sohne has built the Zeitwerk since 2009. It shows time with jumping numerals and the in-house calibre L043.1. A working copy of that display does not exist at scale. Almost every listing sold as a fake Zeitwerk is one of three things: a fantasy watch with a printed dial, a quartz watch with numbers on a screen, or a genuine watch named wrong by a seller who does not know the model.
What the watch is
Two large numeral windows replace the hands. Hours sit on the left. Minutes sit on the right. A small seconds subdial sits at 6 o'clock. At the top of each minute the minute disc jumps forward in one step. At the top of each hour the hour disc jumps.
Case diameter is 41.9 mm. Height is 12.6 mm. Water resistance is 30 m. The movement is hand-wound, runs at 18,000 vph, holds 36 hours of power reserve, and carries 388 parts and 68 jewels. Lange builds about 5,000 watches a year across all lines. The Zeitwerk is a small share of that total.
Movement checks
Ask for a photo of the caseback in daylight. Production Zeitwerk watches use a sapphire back.
- Three-quarter plate in untreated German silver. The color is pale yellow-grey, not chrome white.
- Hand-engraved balance cock. Each engraving is cut by hand, so no two match.
- Gold chatons held by blued screws.
- Constant-force escapement with the patent marking on the plate.
A fake carries a module bolted onto a small automatic movement. The caseback shows a rotor, or an empty space where the jumping mechanism should sit. Case height on those builds passes 14 mm.
Dial and case checks
- The two numeral windows are large and close to square. Copies use small round windows.
- The minute disc jumps once per minute. A sweeping hand or a smooth digital roll is wrong.
- Numerals are printed black on white discs in a serif face. Copy discs show uneven spacing and bled ink at the edges.
- Caseback engraving reads "Made in Germany" and "Glashutte I/SA".
- Platinum is about 21.4 g/cm3 against 7.9 g/cm3 for steel. A platinum Zeitwerk on a strap feels dense in the hand. Copies feel light.
Price and paperwork
Retail on a gold Zeitwerk sat above $80,000 before tax in recent years. Auction results for gold models land between $60,000 and $95,000. A listing at $400 for a "Swiss made Zeitwerk" is a different object, not a copy of this reference.
Why the model is copied less
The jump needs a remontoir and a separate train. That costs more to copy than a three-hand layout. The buyer pool for a $90,000 German watch is smaller than the pool for a Rolex Submariner. Copy shops follow volume. They build Datejusts and Submariners.
Steps before you pay
- Request a video of the minute jump. Keep the seconds subdial and the minute disc in the same clip.
- Request the caseback in daylight. Check engraving depth and plate color.
- Ask for the original invoice and service papers.
- Match the serial number on the caseback to the movement.
- Use a payment method with a return window.
