Short answer
A replica Drive 42mm steel is a copy of the Cartier Drive de Cartier in a steel cushion case. The 42mm figure comes from seller listings. Cartier lists the time-only Drive at 40 mm wide and 41 mm lug to lug, with a thickness near 11.25 mm. A 42mm listing can mean the case was measured across the widest point or measured with the crown guard included. Ask for a caliper photo before you pay.
Case shape and size
The Drive case is a cushion: a square with rounded corners and a slight curve on the flanks. The bezel sits above the case band. Lugs are short and angled down, so the watch wears smaller than the numbers suggest. Replica cases land between 11 mm and 12.5 mm thick. A case over 12.5 mm on a 42mm listing points to a thick movement holder or a quartz build.
Movement
The genuine Drive time-only uses calibre 1904 MC: automatic, 27 jewels, 28,800 vph, 48-hour power reserve. Replicas use one of four movements:
- Miyota 9015: automatic, 28,800 vph, hacking, about 42 hours.
- Seagull ST21: automatic, 28,800 vph, a copy of the ETA 2824 layout.
- ETA 2824 clone: automatic, 28,800 vph, common in mid-tier builds.
- Quartz: thin, cheap, no sweep. Found on low-price listings.
Ask the seller for the movement name and a photo of the rotor. A 28,800 vph movement sweeps in six steps per second. A 21,600 vph movement looks slower at the second hand.
Dial and finish checks
- Center guilloche: lines should be cut into the metal, not printed. Check a macro photo.
- Roman numerals: black print, sharp edges, no bleed into the silvered dial.
- Hands: sword shape, correct length, blue steel on some versions.
- Crown: faceted, blue cabochon set flush with the metal.
- Caseback: eight screws on the original. Check screw heads and engraving depth.
- Crystal: sapphire with antireflective coating. A blue tint under light means coating is present.
Steel finishing
The original mixes brushed flanks with a polished bezel top. Replica polishing can round the edge where the two surfaces meet. Look at the line between brushed and polished zones on a side photo. A crisp line costs money to produce. A soft line is common on low-tier builds.
Price bands
Entry builds run about $120 to $250, often with quartz or a basic automatic. Mid-tier builds with a 9015 or 2824 clone run about $300 to $600. Above $600 buys better case finishing, a thinner case, and a coated sapphire. Genuine steel Drive time-only watches trade in the low four figures on the secondary market. Prices move with condition and box and papers, so check current sold listings.
Confirm before buying
- Case measurement photo with calipers, crown side and 12 to 6.
- Movement name and rotor photo.
- Water resistance: most replicas are not pressure tested. Do not swim with one.
- Strap material and buckle type. Alligator grain leather is common, real alligator is not.
- Return window, shipping method, and tracking number.
Care
Wipe the case with a soft cloth after wear. Keep leather straps away from water. Have the movement serviced every four to six years if you wear the watch daily. Store it face up in a dry place.
