Quick answer

"Replica Ingenieur 200" is a seller term. It is not an IWC reference number. IWC uses four-digit numbers for the Ingenieur line (1832, 3508, 3227, 3239) or IW-prefixed numbers (IW3289). Listings with "200" in the title point to two watches: the 1976 Ingenieur SL and the current Ingenieur Automatic 40. Ask the seller which one is being copied before you pay. Get the case diameter, the movement name, and the water-resistance claim in writing.

What the name points to

Gérald Genta designed the Ingenieur SL ref. 1832 in 1976. It has an integrated bracelet, a flat bezel held by five screws, and a 40 mm case. The Ingenieur Automatic 40 ref. IW3289 came back in 2023 with the same 40 mm case, a grid dial, and caliber 32111. IWC lists 120 hours of power reserve for that caliber. A copy in the $200 to $500 band does not reach that number.

Case and bracelet checks

  • Measure the case. Real diameter is 40.0 mm. Many copies run 40.5 mm to 41 mm.
  • Measure the thickness. Real height is about 10.8 mm. Builds with a 2813 or 8215 movement add 1 mm to 2 mm.
  • Count the bezel screws. Five on the SL and five on the Automatic 40. Four means the factory copied a different watch.
  • Look at the end links. They should sit flush with the case. A visible gap shows on lower tiers.
  • Check the bracelet taper. H-links narrow toward the clasp on the real watch.

Dial and movement

The modern dial carries a grid of raised lines. Copies print the grid or stamp it. Printed lines sit flat under a loupe. Applied markers stand above the grid on the real dial. The date sits at 3 with no cyclops on any reference.

Movement decides the price more than the dial does. Listings name three families:

  1. Miyota 9015. 28,800 vph, 42-hour reserve, date. Common in mid-tier builds.
  2. Clone of the 32111 or a Sellita SW300 base. A 120-hour reserve claim needs a test on a timing machine.
  3. 2813 type. Low cost. The sweep is rough. Many versions do not hack.

The "200" water-resistance claim

Some listings read 200 m. IWC's spec sheet for the Ingenieur Automatic 40 lists 10 bar, which is 100 m. A 200 m figure does not come from IWC. A case with a press-fit back and no crown seals will not hold that pressure. Ask for a pressure test result. If the seller has none, treat the watch as splash resistant.

Price bands sellers use

$80 to $150: alloy or low-grade steel case, printed dial, quartz or basic automatic.
$200 to $400: steel case, Miyota 9015 or a clone, better bracelet fit.
$500 and up: closer clone movement, sharper case edges, sapphire with coating.

What no replica delivers

Service records. Case finishing under a loupe. The feel of the crown threads. Resale value. IWC will not service a copy. Budget for a movement swap or a local watchmaker when the watch stops.
