Replica IW371436: short answer
The IW371436 is a reference in the IWC Portugieser Chronograph 3714 family. A replica of it is a 40.9 mm steel chronograph with two sub-dials, leaf hands and a Valjoux 7750 style movement. Grade decides the result. A $120 copy and a $400 copy share a silhouette and little else. Movement, crystal, dial print and hand finish separate them.
Genuine reference facts
IWC built the 3714 Portugieser Chronograph on a 40.9 mm case with 12.3 mm thickness and 30 m water resistance. The movement is calibre 79350, a modified Valjoux 7750 with a 44 hour power reserve. The dial carries a 30 minute chronograph counter at 12 o'clock and running seconds at 6 o'clock, plus a date at 3. IWC ran the 3714 line in several dial and case metal versions over two decades. Confirm the dial colour, hands and strap for 371436 against IWC records before you judge a replica photo.
Movement in the replica
Most replicas run a Chinese copy of the 7750, sold as a 7750 clone or A7750. The 12 and 6 sub-dial layout matches, so the dial reads correct from the outside. Differences show in the chronograph action. A clone 7750 needs a firmer push to start and stop than the 79350, and the reset is less crisp. The 3714 uses a closed steel caseback, so movement decoration behind the case matters less than dial and case work.
Case and dial checks
- Diameter: measure it. Target is 40.9 mm. Many replicas run 41 to 42 mm.
- Thickness: 12.3 mm on the genuine. Anything past 13.5 mm points to a low grade case.
- Sub-dial line: the centers of the 12 and 6 counters sit on one vertical line through the crown.
- Dial print: the IWC and SCHAFFHAUSEN letters need sharp edges under a loupe. Soft edges mean cheap pad printing.
- Hands: leaf shape with polished bevels, not flat stamped metal.
- Crystal: sapphire with a light dome. Mineral glass scratches and shows a blue tint at the edge.
- Caseback: reference and serial engraving with correct font depth and spacing.
Questions for the seller
- Which movement is inside, a 7750 clone or a decorated 7750?
- What is the measured case thickness with calipers?
- Is the crystal sapphire or mineral?
- Can you send close photos of the caseback engraving and the clasp?
- Was water resistance tested, or is it a rating only?
Price bands
Entry replicas of the 3714 sit near $100 to $150. Mid grade with a clone 7750 and sapphire runs $250 to $350. Top grade with a cleaner dial and a serviced movement reaches $450 and up. Past that point you pay dealer margin more than parts.
What a replica cannot do
It cannot match the 79350 chronograph feel, the lacquer depth of the genuine dial, or the IWC service network. It will not hold value. Treat it as a look-alike, not an investment. Do not swim with it, even if the listing quotes 30 m.
