Short answer

Replica IW544794 is a copy of an IWC watch sold under reference IW544794. It is not made by IWC. Sellers list it as a 1:1 or mirror copy. Price runs from about $80 for a quartz build to $600 and up for a copy with a decorated mechanical movement. The reference number is the checklist: case size, dial layout, hand set, crystal, strap, and movement type.

What the reference number means

IWC reference numbers start with the letters IW and then six digits. The leading digits mark the model family. The trailing digits mark case metal, dial, and strap variants. Two sellers can show the same base model in steel and in platinum, and both are correct for the number.

IWC publishes case diameter, height, calibre, and water resistance for each reference on its own site. Use that page as the standard you check a replica against. Do not use the seller's photos as the standard.

What sellers claim for this reference

  • Case: 316L stainless steel, polished and brushed mix
  • Crystal: sapphire with anti-reflective coating on better builds, mineral glass on cheap ones
  • Movement: Asian automatic clone, or quartz in the lowest tier
  • Dial: printed text, applied numerals on higher tiers
  • Strap: leather with an alligator grain, lug width stated in the listing
  • Water resistance: 30 m to 50 m claimed

Those are seller claims. Case size and weight move between batches, so measure the watch after it arrives.

Checks before you pay

  1. Case diameter and thickness. Compare to IWC's figure for IW544794. A 1 mm error shows on the wrist and on strap fit.
  2. Dial print. Look at the brand text, numeral shape, and spacing at 12 o'clock. Crooked print is the first tell in photos.
  3. Hand length. Hands that stop short of the minute track are common on low tiers.
  4. Movement. Ask for a photo of the caseback and the bridge finish. A quartz tick shows in a short video.
  5. Crystal. Get the material in writing. Mineral glass picks up scratches.
  6. Weight. Ask for a photo on a scale. Cheap copies weigh less than the original.
  7. Water resistance. Treat the figure as a marketing line. The seller does not pressure-test the watch.

Price tiers

  • Under $120: quartz movement, mineral glass, stamped caseback
  • $150 to $350: Asian automatic, sapphire glass on some builds
  • $400 to $800: decorated clone movement, closer dial print, better strap

Above $800 the price stops tracking visible quality. Ask what the extra money buys. If the answer is a box and a card, the answer is nothing.

What a replica does not give you

No brand warranty. No service from IWC. Parts do not match the original, so a watchmaker who services IWC calibres may refuse the job. Resale value is close to zero. Keep the watch out of water.

Legal note for US buyers

US customs law bars import of goods that carry a counterfeit mark. CBP can seize a shipment, and the rights holder can send a letter. Personal use is not a defense for import.
