Short answer

A replica Lange 1 in platinum copies reference 101.025 and the later 191.025. The best ones match the 38.5 mm case, the off-center dial, and the outsize date. None match the L901.0 movement. The fastest check is weight. Platinum 950 has a density near 21 g/cm3. Steel 316L sits at 7.98 g/cm3. A platinum case of equal volume weighs about 2.6 times a steel one.

What the genuine watch is

A. Lange & Söhne showed the Lange 1 on 24 October 1994 in Dresden. It was one of four watches in the first collection after the brand restarted. The movement is the L901.0. It is manual wind, has 365 parts, 53 jewels, and a 72-hour power reserve. It runs at 21,600 vph. The dial layout is not symmetric: main dial left, outsize date at 1 o'clock, small seconds and the AUF/AB power reserve arc at 4 o'clock. Platinum references carry an argenté dial and blued steel hands.

Numbers to verify

  • Case diameter: 38.5 mm
  • Case height: near 10 mm
  • Lug width: 20 mm
  • Movement: L901.0, manual wind
  • Power reserve: 72 hours
  • Frequency: 21,600 vph
  • Date: two discs, one window

Case height figures differ by reference. Measure the watch in hand instead of trusting a spec sheet.

Case and dial checks

The outsize date is the first tell. The real watch uses two separate discs that jump at midnight. Many replicas print both digits on one disc. The date window is large on the real watch, about three times the height of a standard date aperture. The printed "Made in Germany" sits below the date. The platinum hallmark "950 Pt" sits on the caseback, stamped, not laser etched. Lugs are polished on top and brushed on the side.

Movement checks

Look at the balance cock. Lange engraves it by hand with a floral pattern. No replica does this. The three-quarter plate is German silver, untreated, and shows Glashütte ribbing. Screwed gold chatons hold the jewels. Screws are blued. Replica movements use rhodium-plated plates with laser engraving. Check that the AUF/AB arc moves when you wind the crown. A dead arc is a decoration.

Weight

Platinum is the densest metal used in watch cases. A platinum Lange 1 head feels heavy in the hand and cold on the wrist. Replica cases are steel or plated brass. Brass sits close to steel in density. Neither reaches platinum. If a listing says "platinum" but the head weighs like a steel sports watch, the case is not platinum.

Price context

Genuine Lange 1 platinum prices at retail sit above $50,000. Secondary market prices move with reference and condition, and they change. Auction results for platinum Lange 1 watches land in the tens of thousands of dollars. Replica listings run from about $200 to $600. A seller asking a few thousand dollars for a "platinum" Lange 1 is not selling platinum.

What replicas never get right

  • Hand-engraved balance cock
  • Gold chatons with polished sinks
  • Black polish on steel parts
  • Date font and disc geometry
  • Depth of the platinum hallmark

Checklist before you buy

  1. Ask for the case weight in grams.
  2. Ask for a photo of the balance cock.
  3. Ask for a video of the date jump at midnight.
  4. Ask for the hallmark stamp, not a render.
  5. Compare the date window size against a photo of the genuine watch.
