Short answer

A. Lange & Söhne does not build a watch called the Lange 2. The name comes from sellers, not from the factory in Glashütte, Germany. Listings for a replica Lange 2 in platinum point to one real model: the Lange 1 with a platinum case. Some sellers use "Lange 2" for the second-generation Lange 1 that arrived in 2015. Treat the number as a seller term.

Where the label comes from

A. Lange & Söhne released the Lange 1 in 1994. In 2015 the company rebuilt the watch around a new caliber, the L121.1, with a new case and a new balance. Collectors call that the second generation. Sellers shorten it to "Lange 2." The current catalog also lists the Grand Lange 1, Little Lange 1, Lange 1 Moon Phase, Lange 1 Time Zone, and Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar. None of them is a Lange 2.

The platinum original

  • Case: 38.5 mm wide, about 10.2 mm thick, platinum 950
  • Dial: off-center main dial, outsize date at 1 o'clock, power reserve scale at 3 o'clock, small seconds at 5 o'clock
  • Movement: caliber L121.1, hand wound, two mainspring barrels, 72 hours of reserve, 21,600 vibrations per hour
  • Weight: platinum runs about 20.7 g/cm3. Stainless steel runs about 7.9 g/cm3

What replica cases use

Most replicas ship a 316L or 904L stainless steel case with rhodium plating or a platinum-tone coating. The color reads close under indoor light. The weight does not. A steel copy of a 38.5 mm case lands near 60 to 80 grams on a strap. The platinum original runs past 100 grams. A small number of builds use tungsten alloy, which reaches about 18 g/cm3 and feels closer. Tungsten cases cost more and appear less often.

Checks for a listing

  1. Diameter and thickness. Ask for caliper photos. Copies run thick, often 11 mm or more.
  2. Rotor. The real Lange 1 is hand wound. Look through the caseback. A spinning rotor means the movement is an automatic, not a copy of the L121.1 layout.
  3. Power reserve scale. On the original it tracks 72 hours. On many copies it is a printed disc with no link to the movement.
  4. Outsize date. The original jumps in one step near midnight. Many copies crawl through the change.
  5. Dial printing. Check the lettering weight and the alignment of the date window against the 1 o'clock marker.

Price bands

US retail for a platinum Lange 1 sits above $45,000. Replica listings for the same look run $250 to $900. A high price does not prove a better build. Ask for photos, a movement video, and a weight figure before payment.

What no copy fixes

Hand engraving on the balance cock, black polish on steel parts, and the anglage on the bridges take hours of bench work. A replica buys none of that work. Resale value is close to zero. Service is limited to the seller or a local watchmaker. The case metal is the second gap. A plating layer thins with wear, and the spots where it rubs show base steel.

Unknowns

Factory names behind these builds change, and no public records tie a specific replica Lange 1 to one workshop. Weight figures published by sellers are unverified unless a buyer posts a scale photo.
