What the term covers

A. Lange & Söhne builds watches in Glashütte, Saxony. The company started in 1845, was expropriated in 1948, and relaunched in 1994. The catalog includes the Lange 1, Datograph, Zeitwerk, Saxonia, 1815, and Odysseus. Most of those references exist in platinum.

"Replica Lange platinum" is a seller term. It can mean a copy of a platinum reference, or a copy with a case sold as platinum. Those are two different claims. Platinum is Pt950, a metal with a density of 21.45 g/cm³. Stainless steel 316L sits near 8.0 g/cm³. Tungsten alloy sits near 19.25 g/cm³. A real platinum Lange 1 case has more than twice the mass of the same case in steel.

Case metal

  • Genuine platinum Langes carry a Pt950 stamp on the caseback and between the lugs. Lange uses 950 platinum, not 950 white gold.
  • Most replicas use 316L or 904L steel with rhodium plating or white gold plating. Plating thickness on lower grades stays under 5 microns.
  • Plated cases wear at the crown, lugs, and caseback edges. Steel shows through as a darker line.
  • Tungsten alloy cases add weight as a substitute for platinum. A magnet test does not separate these metals. X-ray fluorescence or a density test does.

Movement

No replica runs a Lange caliber. Lange movements are made in-house. They use a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, gold chatons, blued screws, and a hand-engraved balance cock. Replicas use stock or cloned engines. Common ones are the Seagull ST19, a Miyota 9015, or a clone of the ETA 2824.

Power reserve is a clear tell. The Lange 1 caliber L121.1 runs 72 hours. Replica Lange 1 copies run 38 to 42 hours on a full wind. The outsize date on a Lange 1 uses two separate date discs. Many copies print the date on one disc, or stack two discs on the same plane.

Size, thickness, and weight

The Lange 1 measures 38.5 mm across and 9.8 mm thick. Copies land between 10.5 mm and 12.5 mm. The added movement holder and date module account for the gap. Ask for a side photo with a caliper in frame, plus a stated weight in grams. Platinum Lange 1 references sit near 120 g on a strap. Steel copies sit near 70 g.

Price ranges

Retail for a platinum Lange 1 sits near $50,000 to $60,000. A platinum Datograph runs above $100,000. Replica Lange platinum watches sell for $80 to $600. The gap comes from case metal, movement, and finishing hours. These figures are approximate and move with the used market.

Legal status in the United States

18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. Penalties reach 10 years for a first offense and 20 years for repeat offenses, plus fines. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments and destroy them. A trademark owner can sue under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114.

Buying a counterfeit for personal use is not the same charge as selling one. Importing is a separate risk. CBP seizes counterfeit goods at the border.

Labels sellers use

Terms like "AAA," "1:1," "Swiss made," and "mirror grade" have no standard definition. No body grades replicas. A "Swiss made" mark on a replica has no legal basis. Swiss labeling rules require 60 percent of production costs to be incurred in Switzerland before a watch can carry that label.

Checks before you compare listings

  1. Caseback photo with a visible metal stamp.
  2. Movement photo, not a stock image.
  3. Stated diameter, thickness, and weight in grams.
  4. Return window and refund terms in writing.
  5. Serial and reference numbers, checked against the Lange catalog.

Bottom line

No replica matches a Lange in hand-finishing, movement architecture, or metal. A copy of a platinum reference is a steel or tungsten watch with plating. Any claim of an identical watch is false.
