The genuine IWC Portofino Automatic 40 measures 40 mm across and 9.4 mm thick. Most replica small seconds builds run 9.5 mm to 12 mm thick. Thickness is the first number to check. A thick case lifts the lugs off the wrist and catches on a shirt cuff.
What the model is
The Portofino small seconds puts a running seconds hand in a subdial at 6 o'clock. The rest of the dial carries hours and minutes only. Genuine cases use a 40 mm steel case, a sapphire crystal, 5 bar water resistance and caliber 82200 with a 60-hour power reserve. Reference numbers on the caseback start with IW3583.
Numbers to compare
- Case diameter: 40 mm on the genuine. Replicas land between 39.5 mm and 40.5 mm.
- Case height: 9.4 mm on the genuine. Past 10.5 mm the watch reads thick on the wrist.
- Lug width: 20 mm. Straps for the genuine fit a replica case at this width.
- Water resistance: 5 bar claimed on both. Replicas carry the same engraving. Treat the rating as cosmetic unless the seller states new gaskets were fitted.
- Weight: about 60 g on a leather strap, case only. A heavy case points to a thicker midcase.
Movement
A seconds hand at 6 needs a movement with an offset seconds pinion. Builders use an Asian 2895 or a 2892 with a small seconds module. ETA lists the 2895-2 at 28,800 vph and about 42 hours of reserve. The genuine 82200 runs 28,800 vph and 60 hours. Wind the watch fully, set it down, and note when it stops. A replica that dies near 40 hours runs a 2895 base. One that runs past 55 hours does not.
Checks on the dial and case
- Subdial center. It sits on the vertical center line under the 12. Sideways drift shows in photos.
- Subdial depth. The genuine subdial is a shallow recess with a beveled edge. A flat printed ring reads wrong at arm's length.
- Markers. Applied, with polished edges and a shadow line. Printed markers show no shadow.
- Hand shape. Leaf hands with a clean center ridge. Bent or thick hands come from low-tier assembly.
- Caseback engraving. Check font weight and depth against photos of the genuine reference.
- Crown. Signed, with a firm click at each position and no wobble in the stem.
- Crystal edge. Flush with the bezel on the genuine. A proud crystal sits above the bezel line.
Price tiers
Entry builds sell for $120 to $200. Mid tier runs $250 to $400. Top tier runs $450 to $700. Price tracks the movement and the dial finishing, not the case shape. Ask for a photo of the movement and a photo of the subdial at a 45 degree angle before paying.
Where replicas fall short
Case finishing is the widest gap. Genuine Portofino cases carry sharp bevels and a mix of brushed and polished surfaces that hold an edge. Replicas soften these lines after polishing. Dial printing on the small seconds is the second gap: subdial rings on the genuine are thin and even, and replica rings run thick. Sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both faces costs more, so cheap builds skip the inner coat and the dial turns milky under a lamp. Resale value is zero on any replica. Buy on the movement and the dial, and keep the receipt.
