Short answer

A replica Radiomir 1938 is a copy of the Panerai Radiomir 1938, a hand wound steel dive watch with a 47 mm cushion case. The version most sellers copy is PAM 232, a limited edition of 1,938 pieces released in 2006. Replicas copy the wire lugs, the black sandwich dial, the printed "Radiomir Panerai" text, and the domed plexiglass crystal. Prices run from about $80 to $400. The main tells are the movement, the caseback engraving, and the dial print.

What the original is

Panerai built the first Radiomir for Italian navy frogmen in 1938. The 2006 re-edition, PAM 232, kept the same layout:

  • Case: 47 mm polished steel, cushion shape
  • Lugs: wire, screw bars, not spring bars
  • Dial: two layer sandwich, black, Arabic numerals at 12 and 6
  • Crystal: domed plexiglass, not sapphire
  • Crown: screw down, at 3 o'clock
  • Movement: OP XI, a hand wound caliber based on the ETA 6497 2, 21,600 vph
  • Water resistance: 100 m
  • Production: 1,938 pieces

Some sellers use the name "Radiomir 1938" for other 47 mm Radiomir models. Check the reference number and the caseback text before you buy.

Movements used in replicas

Three groups show up in listings.

  1. Seagull ST36 and ST3600. Hand wound, 16.5 lignes, 21,600 vph. Cheap, common, easy to service.
  2. ETA 6497 2 clones. Same base as the original OP XI. Bridge shape and jewel count match in photos.
  3. Decorated copies. A Seagull or 6497 base with engraved bridges that read "OP XI". The finish is the tell.

Ask for a movement photo. The OP XI bridge shape follows the ETA 6497 2 base. A plain ST36 does not.

What replicas get right

  • 47 mm case diameter and cushion profile
  • Wire lug layout with screw bars
  • Two layer sandwich dial with cut numerals
  • Domed plexiglass with the same edge distortion
  • Hand wind feel at 21,600 vph

What replicas get wrong

  • Case thickness. The original runs near 15 mm. Many replicas run 1 mm to 2 mm thicker. Listings often omit this number. Ask for it.
  • Lume. Replica paint glows for a shorter time and fades faster.
  • Caseback engraving. Font weight and depth are shallow on low grade cases.
  • Dial print. Spacing of "Radiomir Panerai" and the numeral outline differ from the original.
  • Water resistance. Replicas are listed at 30 m or 50 m. That is a claim, not a test. Do not swim with one.

Price bands

  • $80 to $150: quartz or low grade automatic, mineral glass, thick case, printed dial.
  • $150 to $250: Seagull ST36, closer case shape, better dial.
  • $250 to $400: sandwich dial, plexiglass, decorated movement, better crown and engraving.

Prices move with supply. Treat any number as a starting point.

Checks before you buy

  1. Ask for the case thickness in mm.
  2. Ask for a lume photo taken 30 seconds after the light source is removed.
  3. Ask for a straight on caseback photo.
  4. Ask if the crystal is plexiglass or sapphire.
  5. Ask if the lug bars are screw type or spring type.
  6. Ask for a movement photo with the caseback open.
  7. Pay with a method that has buyer protection.
