A fake Rolex Sea-Dweller is a watch built without Rolex involvement. It copies the case shape, the dial, and the name. The real differences sit in the helium escape valve, the dial print, the caseback, the movement, and the price.

  • 126600 (2017): 43 mm case, caliber 3235, 70-hour reserve, 1,220 m, red "Sea-Dweller" line, Cyclops over the date.
  • 116600 (2014): 40 mm, caliber 3135, 48-hour reserve, 1,220 m, no Cyclops.
  • 16600 (1988 to 2009): 40 mm, caliber 3135, 1,220 m, no Cyclops.
  • 126603: two-tone, 43 mm, caliber 3235.
  • Deepsea 136660: 44 mm, 3,900 m, caliber 3235.

A seller who calls a 40 mm case a 126600 is wrong. The number and the case size do not match.

Checks on the outside

  1. Helium escape valve. On the real watch the valve sits at 9 o'clock and turns. Many fakes glue it shut or cut threads that strip.
  2. Dial print. Real print has square edges under a loupe. Fakes show bleeding, thin strokes, or a wrong font weight on "Oyster Perpetual Date".
  3. Cyclops. Real magnification is 2.5x. Fakes run 1.5x to 2x.
  4. Laser coronet. A small crown sits at 6 o'clock on the crystal. It shows at an angle in light. Fakes print it or leave it off.
  5. Rehaut. Rolex engraves "ROLEX ROLEX" on the inner flange with the serial at 6 o'clock.
  6. Bezel. The ceramic insert has a defined pip at 12 and sharp graduations. Fake inserts show dull color and a soft pip.
  7. Caseback and lugs. Reference and serial sit between the lugs. Stamping depth and font matter.

Weight and feel

Fake watches often use 316L steel and hollow links. The bracelet feels light and rattles. Rolex uses Oystersteel and a Glidelock clasp with a 20 mm extension link. The clasp stamp and code matter.

Movement

Caliber 3135 and 3235 run at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 8 beats per second. A sweeping second hand proves nothing, because copies use the same rate. Open the caseback. Check the finishing, the rotor, and the balance bridge. A watchmaker with a timing machine reads the rate and the amplitude.

Water resistance

No replica ships with a pressure test. A 1,220 m rating on a counterfeit case is a claim, not a measurement. Do not dive with one.

Legal status in the US

US law targets the seller. Trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years for a first offense under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Trademark owners can sue under 15 U.S.C. § 1114. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at import. Buying for personal use is a different charge, but the watch can be taken.

What a photo cannot show

Photos hide the valve threads, the movement, the clasp code, and the crystal. Ask for a movement shot, a lug shot, and a caseback shot. If the seller sends stock photos, stop.
