A copy Explorer 2 is a replica of the Rolex Explorer II, and the ones worth your money sit in one narrow tier: 1:1 builds running a cloned 3187 or 3285 movement with a working independent 24-hour hand. Below that tier, nearly every example fails on the same three points. Bezel numerals that are printed or stickered instead of engraved. An orange GMT hand that leans red or neon. And a hand stack in the wrong order. Fix those and the watch reads correctly on the wrist from arm's length, which is the entire point.
Know which Explorer II you are buying
Four generations get copied, and they are not interchangeable. Sellers mix them up constantly, so pin the reference down before you compare photos.
- 1655 (1971). The original with the orange 24-hour hand, later nicknamed the Steve McQueen. Small production, so modern replicas are rare and usually built on a 16570 base with a faked bezel scale.
- 16570 (1989 to 2011). 40mm case, 20mm lugs, black-framed 24-hour hand. Ran the 3185 first, then the 3186 from around 2007. Early ones had drilled lugs.
- 216570 (2011 to 2021). 42mm case, 21mm lugs, orange hand, calibre 3187 with Paraflex shock absorbers. Black or white Polar dial.
- 226570 (2021 on). Same 42mm shell, calibre 3285, roughly 70 hours of reserve. This is the reference most current super clones copy.
What the tiers actually look like
Budget builds run 80 to 150 US dollars. Cases are plated, the 24-hour hand often does not move independently, and the bezel is a printed ring glued into a steel frame. Mid-tier runs 200 to 350 and uses an ETA-style 2836 GMT conversion. It keeps time, but the hand stack sits in the wrong order and the date flips at odd hours.
The top tier runs 400 to 700. That money buys a cloned 3285 or 3187 with a jump hour, an engraved and black-filled bezel, and a case cut to the correct 21mm lug width. If a listing brags about sapphire and 904L steel but the seller dodges questions about the movement, you are looking at mid-tier with a high-tier price tag.
How to Choose the Best Rolex Explorer 2 Replica Watch
The tells that matter
Bezel
The Explorer II bezel is fixed steel with a 24-hour scale cut into the metal and filled with black paint. Run a fingernail across the numerals. Originals and good clones have depth you can feel. Cheap ones are smooth because the scale is printed. Font weight matters too. Replica numerals often run fat and crowded near the 24 marker.
Hand stack
On a correct build the 24-hour hand sits below the minute hand and above nothing else. On converted 2836 movements it lands on top, and the whole dial reads wrong once you notice. This is the single fastest tell and the hardest one to fix later.
Case and bracelet
Check lug width with calipers if you can. A 42mm Explorer II takes a 21mm strap. Replicas that accept 20mm or 22mm are using a generic case. Then look at the crown guards, the brushing direction on the lugs, and how the end links meet the case. Gaps at the lugs show up in every wrist shot. Cheap builds also add a millimeter or two of height through a thick caseback.
Movement behavior
Pull the crown to the second position and turn it. The hour hand should jump in one-hour steps while the 24-hour hand stays put. That is the real GMT function. If the hour hand sweeps instead of jumping, you are holding a standard three-hand movement with an extra gear.
QC checklist before you pay
- Ask for a video of the jump hour, not just still photos.
- Request a straight-on dial shot so you can compare marker alignment between 12 and 6.
- Look at the cyclops edge. Cloudy magnification means a coated or low-grade crystal.
- Confirm the bracelet has a working 5mm Easylink extension, since copies often fake it.
- Skip anything promising deep water resistance. Gaskets on replicas are not tested, so keep it out of the pool.
The short version
Buy the reference you actually want, pay for the movement, and verify the bezel and hand stack before anything else. A copy Explorer 2 with a jumped hour hand and an engraved bezel holds up in daily wear. One without those two things will bother you every time you look down.
